AFSCME Health and Safety Training
AFSCME provides health and safety training that can mean the difference between life and death. We train workers and staff to identify and correct workplace hazards, understand their job safety rights, and use strategies which involve workers in solving problems. Our programs address health and safety issues in all occupations and settings in which AFSCME members work.
Our programs cover topics which include chemicals, back/repetitive strain injuries, workplace violence and security, emergency preparedness, trenching, indoor air quality and mold, workzone safety, infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS tuberculosis, and many more subjects. We also conduct training with affiliates on organizing with health and safety issues. Courses range in length from one hour to one or two-day classes and conferences, and week-long train-the-trainer and other programs.
The union’s health and safety training is also supported in part by a grant from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The AFSCME Training and Education Institute (ATEI) uses the funds to conduct training and technical assistance in the area of hazardous waste operations. The courses are geared for public works, highway, wastewater and other workers who may be first on the scene or may have to assist in a response to a chemical spill or other type of emergency. "The most important thing my union does is keep me safe on the job. Whether we're fighting for ergonomics standards for office workers or bullet proof vest for corrections officers, the safety of members comes first."
